The life of Edgar Allan Poe was almost as mysterious as anything in his famous stories like ‘The Pit And The Pendulum’. Taking its title from the ominous phrase croaked by the bird in ‘The Raven’, NEVERMORE sees Canadian company Catalyst Theatre stepping into Poe’s gloomy Gothic world as they reimagine the events of the author’s life in this musical fable.
Yet rather than stripping away the rumours surrounding Poe’s life, Catalyst instead add many more mythic layers as surreal as the performers’ costumes, whilst their wryly witty music hall songs reveal the pitch-black humour buried deep in the tragic tales. Featuring an equally warped and haunting score, stage design and visuals, NEVERMORE is a fittingly enigmatic tribute to a man whose fevered imagination has inspired everything from the films of Tim Burton to the songs of Nick Cave.
‘….Nevermore is nothing short of magnificent.’
Vue Weekly
‘Really, the entire thing is a hoot, even with the tragic undercurrent beneath Poe's life.’
